the decisive moment

Our lives, series of impressions, pass like a film reel teasing our senses and without impressions, they say a human is unable to survive. In street photography, we find ourselves chasing these impressions and waiting patiently to freeze the moment that moves us the most. It is those frozen moments that give us the ultimate satisfaction and take us a step closer to finding ourselves.

The search. And the discovery. That’s what makes it all so compelling. It’s not about finding the answers–it’s about questioning them.

Our lives, series of images, of fleeting impressions, some recalled, others fading away into oblivion. In the streets, our eyes are open, seeking, willing ourselves to be courted by the ordinary, letting it metamorphose into an extraordinary moment, to hold and to keep. It is a human affair after all.

Right here. Right now. Somewhere between yesterday and tomorrow. The fleeting moments of our lives.

Motion. Collision. The merging of people with the urban landscape. Relentless energy. Blur.

In street photography we get to discover the power of partials and the ability to tell so much with only part of the subject in our composition. In fact so much more can be evoked that way by engaging the imagination and not giving the mind all the information, but sending it to search for its own story instead. It is another bit of magic to discover the way of with the camera.

The way we live these days, especially in the big cities, alienates us from others around us to a degree that we may live years in an apartment without knowing the name of our next door neighbor. With street photography, I meet people every day, I ask their names, they tell me their ages, chapters of their life stories, we look each other in the eyes, we exchange smiles, and we meet at a level that goes deeper than the superficial. When you love street photography, you find yourself loving people, and this makes the world a touch warmer and more pleasant to be in.

As mobile phone photography will be a major component in our workshops, we will regularly be posting iPhone images. Mobile phones are quickly becoming essential tools for street photographers because they are small and easy to use. We are hoping to dispel the myth that mobile photography is a lesser art form. Just the opposite in fact. The challenge is finding new and creative ways to shoot street that you never imagined possible.

Today I went to explore a new/old neighborhood in Shanghai for the first time, and the process felt so exciting, almost like going on a date. I love street photography so much, that calling it a first date today felt really appropriate. With street photography, it is not only about you, the camera and the subject. There is so much more involved, like the magic of the unexpected, the unknown that will reveal itself to you and what watches you back as you watch it through your lens. It is most certainly a two-way street, a passionate exchange, and a love affair of sorts.
